ASIA

Sabemos que las divisiones entre naciones suelen ser bastante arbitrarias, pero, ¿también las de los continentes? Ninguna más evidente que la que separa a Asia y a Europa, ¿dónde están los límites geográficos naturales de Europa? ¿Por qué se la separa de Asia? ¿Por una razón cultural? Y si es así, ¿Por qué se considera que Siria, India y China pertenecen a un mismo continente? No hay masa continental más diversa culturalmente que Asia. India, por sí sola, rivaliza en variedad con Europa: tiene el doble de sus habitantes y nada menos que 16 lenguas y alfabetos oficiales. Ni siquiera la potencia avasalladora de los han ha conseguido borrar las peculiaridades de los pueblos chinos. ¡Tengo que volver a Asia!

We know that the borders between nations tend to be quite arbitrary, but, those between continents too? None more blatant than the frontier between Asia and Europe, where are little Europe natural geographical limits? Why is it separated from Asia? For a cultural reason? Why, then, are Syria, India and China considered part of the same continent? There’s not a more culturally diverse continental mass than Asia. India, by itself, rivals in variety with Europe: it has twice its population and nothing less than 16 official languages, with as many alphabets. Not even the Han’s owerwhelming power has been able to erase the peculiarities of the Chinese peoples. I have to go back to Asia!

AMÉRICA

Los pueblos del viejo mundo vinieron aquí a mezclarse: los asiáticos llegaron primero y crearon las civilizaciones más deslumbrantes, nos dieron el esqueleto de nuestro ser actual; con biblia y espada, los europeos aparecieron después, nos entregaron las luces brillantes del enciclopedismo, lo que hoy es nuestra piel; a los africanos los trajeron encadenados bajo cubierta, y nos insuflaron con sensibilidad y fuerza, nuestra alma. Somos la gente de las mezclas más profundas, de todo tipo, los híbridos, los mestizos: luchamos y disfrutamos al lidiar con nuestras tantas vertientes de origen, y las transformamos en producciones complejas, algunas hechas con arte y belleza, otras espantosamente desgraciadas. Somos el gran experimento para el futuro de la humanidad.

Amo a América, desde el estrecho de Behring hasta la Tierra del Fuego. Y sí, eso incluye lo que se encuentra entre la hoja de maple y el águila y la serpiente. Sobre todo a partir del 4 de noviembre.

The peoples from the old world came here to mix: the Asians arrived first and created the most amazing civilizations, they provided us with the bones of our present self; the Europeans showed up much later with sword and bible, they gave us the shiny lights of Enciclopedism, our skin; the Africans were brought below deck, in chains, and blew into us with feeling and strength, our soul. We are the people of the deepest mixtures of all sorts, the hybrids, the mestizos: we struggle and we enjoy dealing with our many inputs, we transform them in complex outputs, some beautifully crafted, others awfully disgraced. We are the great experiment for the future of the humankind.

I love America, from the Behring Straits to the Tierra del Fuego. And yes, that includes what lies between the maple leaf and the eagle and snake. Especially since November 4th.

Es una parte vital de nuestra cultura latinoamericana. De ahí venimos todos.

The word Africa makes me shake… I get a breath of poetry, a sting of pain, an enthusiastic feeling of hope.

It’s a vital part for our Latin American culture, we wouldn’t be what we are without Africa. That’s where we all come from.
